Why can 'Giveaways' damage your brand in the long run?

January 20, 2026

The truth hurts: It's tempting: you raffle off an iPhone and gain 5,000 followers in one night. Your ego inflates. But the following month, nobody reacts to your photos and nobody buys from you. What happened? You filled your store with people who wanted the iPhone, not your products. They are "prize hunters", not customers. Once the giveaway ends, they unfollow you (the famous mass unfollow) or, worse, become "ghost followers".

How the Giveaway Destroys Your Algorithm

Instagram's algorithm works by relevance. When you post a photo, it first shows it to a small sample of your followers (say, 5%).

Result: A poorly done Giveaway is an algorithmic suicide that can take months or years to recover from.

The Regretful Tech Store - Real Case

"TechZone (Sincelejo) participated in a 'mass Giveaway' with celebrity influencers. They paid $500,000 to enter. They gained 8k followers in 3 days. They were happy.

The following month, they posted the promotion of a new computer. Likes: 5. Sales: 0. The comments were full of spam or people asking 'Who won the iPhone?'. We had to step in and do a manual 'cleanup', removing thousands of fake followers to recover their Engagement Rate. It cost them more to fix the damage and rebuild their audience with targeted advertising than what they gained in momentary visibility."
